How to see what apps are running

I took of Advanced Task Killer when I put Fresh and Gumbo on since some have said that they don't play nice. I sometimes mess up and don't close out the app by hitting the back button. My phone starts to warm up and the battery starts draining.

How do I see what apps are running so I can close them out so that I don't kill my battery?

Can I put Advanced Task Killer back on?

This is a question I would like to know an answer to as well. Every time I put on a task killer or task manager....my phone just looses memeory and RAM slowly.

This is the first time I have wiped and put fresh, gumbo + CPU and "NO KILLER" and my phone is the fastest it has ever been. But still wondering what is running in the background that I am not aware of...

Are you saying just not having it installed makes your phone faster, or just not using it makes your phone faster?
The only thing I use my task killer for now is my never ending quest to find a music app that supports bluetooth! Whenever I download one I end up with 2 music players going, and gots to kill one!

Task killers don't tell you what's running, only what is taking up your memory. With android/linux, just because it's taking up memory doesn't mean it's running.

Your best bet at figuring out what's been running is Spare parts. That will tell you what's been running (or used) the most since the last boot. If anything is even close to Sense (if you're running it) in usage time, it's an app that's not closing.

If you go to your battery history in spare parts, it'll tell you what's been keeping your phone awake. If it's keeping your phone awake, it's using processing power. Same thing with the "CPU usage" selection in battery history. If there's anything out of the ordinary near the top, that's your bad app.

Spare parts is perhaps the best app to figure out what's been running, and thus what's using your battery and CPU

yea if you have gumbo that is doing a way better job of killing tasks than any task killer would. IMO task killers are a placebo effect escpecially with a rooted 1.1 fresh and gumbo set-up....and i second tatonkas statement...spare parts is the shiz-nit lotta cool features in it

If your wondering if a specific app is running you can check in settings>applications>manage applications> find the app and click on it. If it's using any RAM it will show you and you can force close from there also. I personally don't use a task manager I only have ES because I was doing something in ESfile manager that required me to download it. ES Task Manger does does show you whats running though, when you pull it up it will show you what's all running or in the backround.

This is what it shows when I open it.
