I have checked every setting I can find but unable to turn off the vm commericial when powering up the optimus v. Can this be turned off or is it something you have to live with?

If it's the annoying VM sound you're talking about, then you need the SilentBoot app. It works great. If it's the just the VM splash screen that appears during boot-up, I would bet you would have to be rooted in order to disable that.

Like mjs, I use Android Assistant to silence the startup process. However, I found that if you move the AA app to the SD card, it's no longer able to UN-mute the sound once the phone has finished booting up, because it takes a while for stuff on the SD card to load.

I'll have to try the silent boot app. Also if you put the phone in silent mode before you turn it off it should remain in silent mode when you turn it back on (it might buzz).

If you are using Tasker you can create a profile using the Events Device Shutdown to put your phone in Silent Mode when shutting down and the event Device Boot to turn off Silent Mode after rebooting. I tried it and it worked.
