Help how to sync phone contacts

need some help for my contacts, i have some contacts on the phone and i was not able to sync my phone contacts with my gmail contacts? Am i missing something or do i need to use htc sense to sync up the two? Thanks

Go to Accounts and Sync make sure Background Data and Auto Sync are checked. Select your gmail account and check sync contacts.

it turn out these contacts were inputed in to the phone before i setup the email account. now i'm trying to figure if i can still sync up with my email or do i have to delete and recreate these contacts again.
