How to toggle the notification bar

I somehow accidently turned off the notification bar from the original Android 4.0.3 and now I cannot use the "get around" functions such as pressing the back, home or recent apps buttons, nor can I see the status and system icons. I really sincerely hope that someone can provide me with instructions to turn the notification bar back on, because having no notification bar has been really inconvenient... thanks for any help?

What device are you using?

... or install another launcher. In launcher pro there is setting to hide / show the bar, either auto or by pressing home.
