Help How to transfer file to the SGS3

rowlers

This might be a dumb question, but with mt previous Desire I simply plugged in to usb, and copy files back and forth between my Linux netboot and the phone. now with the SGS3 this MTP thingy basically fooks withe my netbook and I keep getting mount errors WTF? All I want to do is put some music on it!

Any Ideas? I do have access to an XP machine but don't want the hassle of booting that every time I want to transfer something!

Cheers

I use airdroid (play store) when transferring my normal stuff. Won't recognise hidden folders, though. Maybe you have to install Kies first on the machine to get the drivers going..?

Thats the problem KIES not available for linux! Bit of a backward step, USB mass storage is so much easier grrrrrr...

My linux machine has vsftp installed which creates a background service and acts as an ftp server. I then actually just connect to everything using Estrongs as you can add FTP servers to that.

I literally FTP everything to and from my device. I also set up port forwadring on my router so I can ftp from anywhere in the world, providing my laptop is on, which it invariably is.

What flavour of linux is it?

Mint 11.

Suppose I could FTP over wifi, just a bit slower

I find its fine. OK well mint is ubuntu so that's straight forward. Just Google vsftp mint or vsftp ubuntu. Pretty easy

Shame.

Just seen something odd.

When I connect as MTP, the folders open for /sdcard and /extsdcard but all the folders list as 0 items.

However, if I switch to the camera version PTP, I can see items being listed and opening the folders I can see files (pictures or otherwise)

think I've got something reliable now!
WellFTP running on the phone. gftp running on the netbook. nice window, with progress indicators, seems to be working pretty well.

cheers chaps

I used to use FTP Cafe until I found out that I could use estrongs for FTP. as ikt was my main explorer anyway, it seemed ideal.

Shame it doesnt work for you.

But glad you have a solution.

Its stopped working now, phone keeps dropping its wifi, but looks like its still connected wtf?

Is there a fix somewhere for wifi drops? Sure I've read somewhere...

I dont know. Ive not experienced it myself. Did you check out PTP mode as previously suggested?

No forgot about that. Fooked it off cos its doing my bonce in. Using my Xp machine for now and its working via USB .

The FTP would be handy for the odd file in the future tho. I keep getting the "remote file stopped responding" or words to that effect any way..

(PS is it ODIN to flash kernels?)

You can use Odin to flash things (or once rooted mobile odin) but I'm a stickler for using generic methods and do everything via CWM

Yeah its annoying. Whats worse is in Linux, it pops up a new window for sdcard and extsdcard and even shows me all the folders. I have a windows virtual machine on my linux PC and it connects through fine.

Although like I said, the PTP works fine for me now. Just MTP doesnt.

Ive been using FTP to transfer folders of a GB or so. Not one issue.

I'm determined to get to the bottom of it! I'll try having the ftp server on my netbook and connect to it using estrongs or similar. I'll ahve a go at the PTP now too.
Flashed the Kernel via CWM as usual. working nice ;)

cant you just connect your phone to your computer, open your phone drive from your computer and drag files onto your phone? This is what I did with my old droid. never had to use a program.

Was your old Droid ICS and your computer Linux? That's the issue.

gotchya. Missed that part.

but with windows and a sg3(ics), you can just connect your phone to your computer and drag files on and off?

Yes. Mass storage is no longer an option though. Just media transfer and picture transfer which doesnt work well with Linux

without getting too excited, filezilla client and rapfox ftp server are currently transferring a 700mb video file without hitch so far...

EDIT Yep, works fine - YIPPEEE!

Don't have one yet BUT if you put in a micro SD card I believe that shows up as external storage.

Actually both the internal sd card and external sd card show up.

The issue, as mentioned in this thread is that ics no longer has a generic "mount USB storage" mode.

It uses a media transfer protocol (mtp) or photo/picture transfer protocol (ptp) as the only 2 selectable options when usb is connected.

On windows this is fine but as stated, this doesn't work too well with all distributions of Linux. This was all mentioned earlier.

I think it "may" have been the wifi sleep policy causing issues to. got it set to "never" so this may have been the cure.

Will test again at some point, just want to play at the moment tho!

If thats an issue with FTP, if you use estrongs anyway, you should retest taht as its handy to have all file repositories in one application
