How to turn off system ON & OFF etc sounds

FrancisS

Newbie
I have a Tracfone LG L41C with Android 4.4.2. Is there a way to turn off the sounds at Settings>Sound>System>Notification Sound>LG Notification Sounds? There is a list of choices (Acoustic Guitar, Arpeggio, Crystal, etc.) but no choice for SILENT or NONE. Even when Airplane Mode is turned ON the Notification Sound remains active; that is, in Airplane Mode it still ding-dong-dings ("crystal") when the device is turned OFF or ON. Is there a way to set Settings>Sound>System>Notification Sound>LG Notification Sounds to OFF, NONE, or SILENT? Thank you.

The power on/off sounds are handled by the firmware and for the most part aren't able to be changed without root. The phone may respect volume settings of the phone, though. Have you tried setting the volume to zero?

That did it! I was afraid to do that, because I feared an incoming call would be silenced, too, but that still sounds! THANK YOU!

Just be careful because the notification sounds will remain muted until you turn the volume back up. You might be able to use something like Tasker to automate setting the volume to zero when you shut down and back to an audible level after you boot, thus silencing the on/off sounds but still maintaining your notifications. Not sure, but it could work.

I don't know what "notification sounds" means exactly, or when they play. I use the device only as a phone; that is, to place and receive telephone calls. After following your advice, I called my smartphone number from a landline, and the ringtone (& vibration) worked. I do not use the phone for email, music, games, and the like. So I think (hope) I'm okay. But I will be careful and monitor.
