How to turn on Gmail icon notifications? Is there even such feature?

Hey guys,

So I just got my droid and it seems it isn't as intuitive as I would like. But, that's okay.

Is there a way to turn on gmail icon notifications?
ie. if I get an email a little number shows up on the gmail app that tells me I got a new email.
On my blackberry, every new email would would cause my phone to vibrate and a new number notification would appear on my email client.

ie. I get five new emails, there would be a little 5 on my gmail email icon

is this possible?
 
It's possible, like with launcher pro or this app:

Something like that?
 
Not possible on Gmail app. Google removed the third party notification API. You have to use a different email app.

ADW Notifier still works with ADW launcher and gives me an email count from the Gmail app.

this is kind of silly. why isn't there a native email app that has this basic function...

I don't know how it works for your device, but on mine, it'll give me a number of emails in the drop down window. It's not as nice as a number on an icon, but there are ways of getting that, like I just mentioned.

Ok you confuse me. You say ADW Notifier works but you say you get it from the notification bar?

Anyway, ok, last I tried a couple of weeks ago Go and LP notification bubbles don't work.

No, the notification pull down will display unread email number (no icons displayed).

Alternatively, if someone wants the icons to show unread emails, ADW with ADW notifier will still do that.
