How to update an app that wasn't installed through the market

I installed Angry Birds from GetJar. Now there is an update. Naturally, the Market doesn't recognize my GetJar version. I checked GetJar and they appear to have the update version. However, there is nothing regarding "updating" that I can see. If I download the apk and install it will I lose my data?

I would just get it from the Market, that way it updates as it should.

Ok but, if I dowload from the market or getjar, will it update my installation and keep my data or will is overwrite and lose my progress?

It just updates the application, your data is not normally affected. Unless a data structure change is involved, you normally have no worries. I have 2 applications I purchased directly from the vendor that are not available from the market.
