How to Update Firmware

I have just bought an android tablet. I was in the process of setting it up and somehow I am asked to enter a password. I know of no pass word or how to enter it. I think that I need a firmware update. How do I do that?

What kind of tablet is it? This way I will be able to steer you in the right direction.

You can "reset" the device to its factory default settings, this should wipe clean everything and restore the device to factory settings.
