riionten

Lurker
Hello! I am a novice android user, and my friend rooted my phone quit a while ago for me.
I was wondering if there was any updates for Gingerbread 2.3.4?

& If possible how to update to the latest version.

My phone says :
Firmware : 2.3.4
Baseband :
I9000XXJVP
Kernel Version:
2.6.35.7-I9000XXJVP-CL264642se.infra@SEP-40 #2
Build Number :
GINGERBREAD.XXJVP

There are different ways of updating firmware for android phones..you probably familiar with samsung kies (but because you are rooted kies will not recognise your phone)..
Using odin you can flash newer firmware.. There is android 2.3.5 and also 2.3.6.. Take your pick

I'm in the same boat. Is there anything special do we need to do to get around the custom ROM?

what rom are you on & have you got the (mtp application)it is a system app.. That will enable you to connect with kies..
But you will not able to update firmware a kies does not recognise rooted phones.. Once rooted you only update manually odin/cwm etc..
Why do you need to use kies..??

I am not trying to use kies. So just download odin and run through that? i found the following tut, How to: Update Firmware on Samsung Galaxy with Odin | pinnapedia, will this be suitable for me? or do i start at "Phase 1: Update your Firmware with Odin Multi Downloader" ? Sorry, I'm a bit of a n00b on phones.

Thank you for your help!

@MSBF..
You are on a custom rom, so its very ready to flash another custom rom..(is that what you want a custom rom OR do you want stock rom)..
Obviously you are on very old android firmware its now android 4.0 very last firmware was 2.3.6..most common version for custom roms are gingerbread 2.3.6 and new i.c.s 4.0+...

Now you need to flash custom rom (search internet for many/different custom roms)..

YES you can flash through odin (google it's. Download odin v 1.3 or v1.7)..Remember only some roms need odin flash AND many require flash through recovery (clockworkmod recovery, another version but same thing)..

Tell me in detail what you want..??

I don't really mind if i have a custom rom or stock. Lets go with whatever the easiest option is. I just want to be on gingerbread or higher. I have a folder called clockworkmod and clockworkmod/backup so I assume i have clockwork already but that's just a guess.

I found ROMkitchen.... can i just go through and pick the defaults or do i have to select certain options depending on what i already have? or do i not need to, do I just install odin and follow the manual?

..How do you NOT know if you have CWM..Turn off your device and hold power up+power+home and see if you have CWM

How did you root your phone..??
Have you installed cwm app, which will give you another access route to recovery mode..(type cwm in market)..??

Your best bet is flash a custom rom (which allows zip file download & flash via recovery..much easier to do..
Odin flash will be to much, but if you want plenty help here from all..
