How to upgrade a laptop

You can probably "wipe" it and maybe update to Windows 7/8 if possible if your computer is only a few years old should gain you alot without the expense of a hard drive unless you just want to replace it anyway (bigger/faster?).

how old is the laptop? if its older than three years replacement may be a better option as you'll sink as much to "upgrade" as replace. Manufactures make it fairly simple to change / add memory and change hdd's. CPU and GPU's are a bit more involved depending on the Manufacturer. My philosophy is if its going to cost me more to upgrade than replace its best to replace it or if its going to be over 200 dollars for me to upgrade it.

It's a nice laptop, although a bit bulky. I find it a bit laggy and slow, but it's also my main gaming machine at the moment.
I only thought of upgrading it as to inject new life.... Or I could get a nexus 7?

I don't think GPU on that can be swapped. And even if it could the hunt and cost could be a major pain.

This.
Re-installing Windows won't cost you anything apart from your time. Then the laptop will be performing as if it was new. Do all the updates, then just install the software that you actually need. It's a known fact that Windows can slow down over time, especially if you've been installing a lot of software.

What is the exact model number? You said HPG70 but each G70 has like 3-5 numbers/letters on the end to specify exact model (G70-XXXXX)
Do you have the OEM windows disc? Like mikedt said Id start with re installing windows.
Also like n0ve said you should try an ssd. Even if you don't have an extra sata slot you could go with a 128gb ssd for $90.
Disabling windows Aero is also a small boost in performance since your laptop would no longer need to keep up with that demand.
Don't slow it down with virus software like Norton or McAfee try Avast its free, its the best i've ever used(i install it on all my new builds and when I'm doing virus malware removal for people) and its light on background resources.
