is there a thread here that I am not seeing. My Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 came with Android 2.2

How can I upgrade to a newer release?

Which one should I upgrade to?

Well then you do have a problem.
Maybe heimdal can solve that for you.

If you are on linux, you are going to have to learn to flash roms using Heimdall, which is an open source version of Odin, which is in turn a leaked software from Samsung. Don't worry, it's pretty straight forward to use. Just gotta make sure your battery is charged, and you don't accidentally unplug the phone during the process.
