All of the following info I used to install ICS and root my phone. All is borrowed from XDA site

To upgrade to ICS 4.0.4 (latest ICS build as of 5/8/12)

Download: Build UCLE2 for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket - BriefMobile

To install (this WILL wipe all data, so back up your files)

Download file
Open file ODIN
Turn off phone - pulling battery is fastest
Plug USB into the computer - do not connect your phone yet
Hold the Volume up&down buttons(do not press the power button), and plug the USB cord into phone - this will get you into download mode
Once you see the download screen - hit Volume UP to enter

Make sure that your phone was recognized by Odin - should see one of the white boxes in Odin fill in with info

Now just click start and let it do its thing.

Once done, you are now on ICS 4.0.4 enjoy

Now if you would like to go 1 step further(and since you have a fresh OS install, why not) you can root your phone.

First you'll need ODIN

Go here to get it
ROOT | CWM | ODIN | SGH-I727 and SGH-I727R Skyrocket

Next, you need to download CWM recovery.

You can get it from here(install is very similar to that of upgrading to ICS 4.0.4)
[RECOVERY] Clockworkmod Touch 5.8.1.3 Odin tar - xda-developers

Now after that, you'll need the superuser.zip file. You can get it here
[GUIDE]{ROOT}How To Root The ICS Leak - xda-developers

Now move the superuser.zi file to your phones external SD card.

Now time to install CWM

Open file ODIN that you dowloaded before(not the ICS 1 click)
Turn off phone - pulling battery is fastest
Plug USB into the computer - do not connect your phone yet
Hold the Volume up&down buttons(do not press the power button), and plug the USB cord into phone - this will get you into download mode
Once you see the download screen - hit Volume UP to enter
*On ODIN, Select the PDA button and browse to the SkyrocketCWMrecovery.tar that you downloaded earlier

*Make sure the Re-Partition box is NOT checked*

*Select Start and Odin will do its thing.

*It should flash the Recovery file and reboot the phone.

Once you have that done, boot into recovery mode (you can use a rom manager from the play store - it's the easiest)

Once in recovery, chose the following (this is a touch based cwm - no more using the volume keys)

Install zip from sdcard
choose zip from sdcard
scroll until you see the superuser.zip and select
scroll until you see yes and seleect

Read the info, it may take you 2-3 tries before it is succesful. Once you get a success message, you are now rooted.

Next download Busy Box from the play store. Open Busy Box and choose install.

Enjoy

Currently I have installed a custom ROM - Sky ICS from XDA <--GREAT ROM

How is your battery life with this ROM...

This is on my stock Skyrocket battery

Screenshot_2012-05-18-20-11-59.png

This was last Friday - had the Rom for about 3 days at this point(enough time to get all my programs reset and let things settle in)

I was super busy last Friday at work, so phone got used only on break/lunch and to stream from 3-4:30 and then when I took the screen shot for someone else. Phone came off the charger around 5:30ish Thursday(full charge) - forgot it at work and had to come back

It lasted me until around midnight when it finally died

So do you recommended putting this on it? I'm getting impatient waiting fir att to release ICS

Thank you for this easy to follow guide. I followed your instructions to the T and everything went smoothly. Even rooted it as well. So far everything seems to be working just awesome. 4.0.4 is so much better than the 2.3.6 I was on. Thanks again.

Just something odd that I noticed this morning when I put this ROM on, Why can't I make folders? This is ICS I thought that was one of the big draws of ICS?

Just thought it was a little odd.

Thanks

Drag one app onto another. It creates a folder a la ios style

I'm able to create folders just fine.

Wonder if something is wrong with my build then. I can't do screenshots either like I could with 2.3.6

I am running 4.0.4. Build number IMM76D.UCLE2

Any advice to resolve?? The phone is running great but odd that I can't do those 2 things

Screen shots is power+home hold together for 1second.

Folders should.be as I described. Just take one app on the home screen, drag it on top of another and let go.

all of which i have tried. When i do the commands for screen shots it brings up Task manager.

And folders DO NOT WORK!!!

The only thing I can think is that your flash didn't go as intended and is missing elements. Have you tried reflashing the 4.0.4 Odin?

That's what I am starting to wonder!
Can someone point me in the direction of the build to put it back to ATT's stock 2.3.6 and unroot? I want to make sure i have the right directions.

On the XDA developer site, under Skyrocket - developement section - top of the page first sticky is how to flash back to stock GB

I would really like to do this, but I keep hearing about this and that not working with these ICS ROMs. I know this is listed as the most stable of the lot, but I have been using the Super Stock UCKK1 on GB 2.3.6 and it has been extremely stable with no issues.

Is there any type of issue at all with this ics build and bb on an at&t skyrocket?

I am having zero issues with this version on my skyrocket.

Ok, good to know. I'll have my S3 in 2 weeks, so if I mess something up, I will have a brand new phone to move to. Thanks.

I was really anticipatingmSamsug and AT&T releasing the official version of 4.0.4 this month for all S2 owners , as well as Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 owners. This is looking less and less likely.

How important is installing busybox?

I installed it and it threw a few warnings after running it so I uninstalled. This is on the one click ICS leak. Are the files updated and good to go, or should I reinstall it?

Busy box is only needed if you rooted/rom'd your phone, really doesn't do much otherwise.

i downloaded the ics file but i dont know where to open it in odin. phone is in download mode and recognized just not sure where to open file to install it.

If you're doing the 1 click ICS upgrade, once the phone is recognized by ODIN and is in download mode, hit start. That is all. That 1 click ODIN already has the ICS build loaded and ready to go.

I flash this from and it worked. Perfect the first time around. I had backed up my files with titanium back up so I try restoring third party apps, also root it and restore contacts. But I had an issue some a scribbles started to come up from the top of the screen that looked looked like the process running very annoying blocking the visual.
I just run a cwr recovery to go back to gingerbread then flash it again .
Its running great but I have not root yet. I have it working with Apex launcher and it runs great.
