Help How to use GPS without UMTS when roaming?

When using my T-mobile Google G1 outside my own country for navigation purposes, I don't want the phone to download Google Maps card information from the internet, because of the huge costs of roaming access.
But how can I find my route by "just using GPS", if the device has no cards installed, like a TomTom or a Garmin device?

Just got the Magic and am really impressed... This is one of the many questions on my mind so would like to see if there are any ways? Even if it means using an alternative mapping program?
