Root How to use System Tuner to stabilize the Prevail

justindlc

Lurker
Phone: Samsung Prevail
ROM: CTMod 3.80
Kernel: KoumaKernel 2.5
CPU gov: smartassV2
i/o sched: sio
read-ahead cache: 1024
min/max: 200/825

Hi all, the Samsung Prevail was my first smartphone about a year ago. Then about two months ago I decided to root it. It has been fairly unstable since. It simply won't stay on for long periods, or will shut down / freeze at random times.

I found that adding System Tuner and putting the recommended settings on tweaks on SysCtl to add some stability. Any way to use these settings to just try to keep the phone on longer? AKA sacrifice speed and responsiveness to just... keeping the phone on.

I installed the Koumamod and partitioned the SD Card to act as hard drive space (and bought a new SD 10 card). I've also tried out a bunch of settings, but have landed on smartassV2 and sio with a read cache of 1024. (Edit: Usually running min 200mhz and max 844mhz.) If anyone has any tips on the dozens of settings I have here and what might work better for keeping the phone on... it'd be appreciated.

To be clear: if I leave the phone charged overnight it will inevitably turn off. I thought it might be overheating so I charged it up to about 80 and left it turned on but unplugged and it still shut down (and rebooted in the morning to a battery of about 7). I don't think it's the battery. I routinely charged overnight when it was not rooted and it didn't turn off much before root.

In addition to that, the phone will just randomly turn off during the day. Sometimes it comes right back up, but about half the time I have to try rebooting several times, removing the battery, etc.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention I run it around min 200 and max 844 or 825. I read different things in different places but I think the standard running speed of the phone is 800, so I don't think I'm overclocking it too much...? Or I read 600 somewhere else, so...

You need to mention when you rooted what ROM you're using if any. Sometimes phones turn off when the SD card is not formatted or partition right. Most of the custom Roms do not need any tuning or tweaking they are done within the ROM. The more info you give the better everybody can help you.:)

Some phones simply can't even handle being over clocked to any extent... Even just bumping it up one step. Try bringing it back down to 800 and see if that improves your stability any

Absolutely bro. I've seen a BUNCH of phones in here that could not handle any amount of overclocking.

Overclocking my prevail would cause instability after a while. I could do it but not unending. I decided not to overclock looked for another way. I found that using Chainfire3D to set texture back to 16bit helped. I didn't notice any real difference in image quality, but did notice snappier performance from the phone.

Thanks for the tips so far. I have tried putting my max back down to 800. I've also added info on my rom etc. to my original post:

Phone: Samsung Prevail
ROM: CTMod 3.80
Kernel: KoumaKernel 2.5
CPU gov: smartassV2
i/o sched: sio
read-ahead cache: 1024
min/max: 200/825

This was my first root so I followed this "Root for dummies" step by step. Are there other roms or kernels I could try out?

I originally asked about how to use the settings on System Tuner because there are so many options in there. But when I pressed "recommended settings" on the tweaks it seemed to help things out. Any other tips from other apps/controls that I could set?

Don't know anything about "System Tuner", but as far as I know, CTMod 3.80 has all the optimizations already in..... Maybe the system tuner is the problem. Try a fresh install of CTMod and don't use system tuner !! I run my Prevail now for over a year overclocked at 900 and have no problems at all !

PS: Could also be, that system tuner is not 100% compatible with the Prevail and gives you trouble !

EDIT : Could also be, that the smartass gov is giving you trouble. Just use the one included with CTMod !

you could just try cyanogenmod rather than ctmod... cm7 has always worked perfectly fine for me (although it won't be any help if you throw it at the ground repeatedly out of rage.. :p)
