Help How to wipe OS to start from scratch?

The all knowing requires a method to reinstall the OS to start from scratch. We have far too much junk installed. We just want to start over...
 
You could also grab the entire ROM that was released for the recent update and just install that. It will wipe the OS and user data, reinstall the OS with updates and you'll have a clean state.

You could also go to a VZW corporate store and they will do it no charge and also install any updates at the same time.

Quick question - is this any different than doing a factory reset? I ask b/c HTC tech support told me to try manually installing the new update from their website and said it'd be different...not sure how and they couldn't explain.

Trying to fix some issues with my phone that the factory restore is not fixing.

sorry for resurrecting such an old thread, but it came up on a search i did for complete phone wiping methods.

the method described is like wanting to completely format your PC, but actually deleting the cookies in your browser.

factory reset wipes personal data (about 50% of it). it does not, in any way, count as a hard reset or wipe.

that being said, i was hoping someone would actually know a method to wipe the internal memory completely, shred the resulting free space with a (minimum) 7 pass random rewrite and install a fresh ROM.

Factory reset wipes all of the /data partition - where user apps and data are stored, including phone logs, text and mms messages, etc. - as well as the /cache partition. I'm not sure what you mean about wiping only 50% of user data. Of course it does not wipe the SD card, but you can just pull that. Just curious - other than SD, what doesn't get wiped from a factory reset?

I really don't know of any utility that writes random data to the /data and /cache partitions. I'm personally not that paranoid. The Eris has a small data partition, so I'd think creating a random gmail account, factory resetting, setting up with the random account and installing a few large apps and then factory resetting would be more than enough to protect against somebody extracting data after a factory reset. Perhaps I am wrong, though.
 
I"m having a big problem. My Iconia Tablet running ICS has been infected, or rather hijacked, by malicious software. The user name has been changed, the host has been changed and the OS appears to be rooted or modified. The home screen locks up or starts to jitter and you can't do a thing about it. I've tried several factory resets but it hasn't worked. I tried to root the OS but that failed (I don't really know what I'm doing though). I think the only thing that I can do is wipe the memory completely and install Android from scratch. Could you suggest how to perform this?

Bob, I think that you are best off posting this question in the appropriate Iconia tablet forum here to get the best answer - this forum is one dedicated to the HTC Droid Eris.

There are several Iconia tablet forums at android forums. Try looking at our main page, http://androidforums.com/ , and look for the one that matches your tablet.
