Welcome to the forums!!!!!!
I personally have not heard recently about viruses on android.
The play store has been pretty good about weeding out questionable apps.
I dont even use an anti virus on my phone and have had ALOT of apps downloaded over that past year.
Not to say it can't happen but I would personally say I don't worry much about it.
Some others may pop in here and offer a different opinion:)

If you stick to the Play store and the Amazon Market, you will be safe. There are not traditional viruses available due to how Android works. The only way to get malware is to install an app with malicious intent. The two mainstream markets quickly respond to concerns users have.

If you should download an apk file from somewhere on the internet, especially if it is a paid app, that is at your own risk. Moral of the story, pay a dollar, and don't pirate apps.

Hey there razee, welcome! :)

Anyhow, to get down to the issue, if you are downloading apps on the play store all are virus free, you can download AVG-Free for Android which could prevent you from getting a virus, but the only way for such a thing to happen, is downloading an app or something from the mobile Web Browser and authorizing it...again it requires your authorization, so you would be authorizing a virus to take over your device.

Anyhow, I really don't find it a big deal at all on Android, however, if you are paranoid like half of the people with smart phones you can get the anti-virus i posted a link for :)

Not trying to offend you by saying you are paranoid, it's just a lot of people over react to Virus's.

I hope this helps :D

There are no such things as "viruses" for Android in the correct definition. There are however malware, but these can only do damage if you actually do install them. As stated above, don't download anywhere else apart from legitimate app stores and you'll be safe. Web browsing anywhere is technically completely safe as well, since Windows viruses don't work on Android.
