How Windows sees Droid Memory: 3 Qs

I've finally gotten a couple fairly successful timelapse & hyperlapse shots recorded on my Droid, and have been learning about offloading via the USB cable onto my laptop.

A couple questions about this came up:

1. Windows 7 initially recognized the Droid internal memory as a Verizon CD, as shown in the attachment.
A 2nd panel opened, the 'What Do You Want To Do' list and I clicked DCIM & 'Always' as I was now an 'expert' on my 2nd go at it.
Have I screwed up? Is there some reason I would need whatever that Verizon Upgrade Assistant is, on my laptop?

2. Would the Droid File Manager care if I deleted or renamed its files using the Windows File Manager (with its handy full size keyboard? Also, is the Droid memory self-defragmenting, or is there an app for that?

3. Altho the phone was On to make the connection to the PC, it turned itself Off (sleep, so have to reenter pin) immediately after the download.
This made me wonder about the hot-pluggable angle; I'd originally intended to download timelapses into a Kingston OTG (which I ordered from BB; they shipped a 3.1 with a clear cap and the mini-USB end does not quite fit the Droid. By the time I finished opening the excessive clamshell packaging, it was non-returnable. Only the black-faceted cap version fits the Droid, unfortunately you cannot see the smaller USB plug while still in the packaging. o_O)

Sorry to be so long-winded, but this made me wonder about how hot-pluggable the OTG flashdrives are.
Can I remove them without fully shutting down the Droid? Linux & Windows both want the drive unmounted first; is there a way to do that on the Droid?

TIA, guys!

Look at XT1254 listed in Windows 7.

In Windows Explorer ... double click on it and it will bring up a folder called Internal Storage.
