How's the video playback?

I'm looking into the Asus transformer and i'd like to know if anyone that already has it can try out some sample videos.

I'm really interested in knowing because i've had the iPod for a while and even tho it technically *does* support a certain 720p, it's negated by the fact that it doesn't actually support anything in your 720p library and end up re-encoding everything. My China PMP pwned my sisters iPod Video because i can just drop avi files straight from my torrent folder, and my Archos pwned my own iPod 4th Gen for the same reason (I had to leave the PC running overnight converting videos just for the iPod).

I'd just like to know how the Transformer performs in non-standard profiles and subtitles. If you've watched quite a few anime's you'll note that they don't actually follow any standard profiles and even my desktops ATI5850HD can't play some of them. The videos above are the closest things to being representatives of what i'm regularly running into.

Hmm... i guess the Transformer can't play non-standard h264s (iDevices can't play anything other than low profile h264's too). I think i'll wait for the Archos 9 and see what what other tablets are out by then.

Well, this looks like a confirmation. Seems tegra can only decode baseline h264, and rockplayer isn't gonna help. Which means none of my videos are gonna work. iPod Touch 4th Gen is a pain to use for media playback and i really don't want to go through that again, so i'm gonna have to skip the Transformer.

The issue is the Tegra 2 and Nvidia's HORRIBLE codec support. Been this way since the gTablet launched in November and a lot of us are using the most recent Nvidia video drivers.

Nvidia may have made a good chip, but half a55 support it in regards to video playback. Some hidef content (especially wmv) will crash to desk top or even crash the device when in hardware acceleration mode. Xoomers are having the same problmes as far as less than great video playback.

Well this is kind of depressing. Didn't realize the codec support was so shabby. My Archos 101 had no issues with most stuff I threw at it, nothing over 720 though.

Ugh! Well, at least this is an issue across all the dual core tablets since they are all using the same chip.

720 res is not so bad. I was referring to higher res files. Tegra 2 seems very picky with some files.
