HPSA+ speeds in San Francisco

netarc

Newbie
Have had my Galaxy S2 (ATT variant) for a couple of days now, and so far have been mighty impressed w/both the phone and the Droid OS (I've been using an iPhone 3GS until now).

If I understand correctly, this phone is an HSPA+ device while the recently released iPhone 4S is an HSDPA (slower?) device? Well my wife picked up a 4S (also on ATT) today, so I was eager to compare the network speeds head-to-head.

I ran a series of tests using both phones' native speedtest app (w/both in similar config: unplugged, wifi OFF, and app set to run test off the same server, in this case SF).

I was stunned & dismayed to find that the 4S *trounced* my S2!?! Over a series of 5 trials, the 4S averaged 4MB/s down, 1MB up; my S2 came up with 2.5MB/s down, 1MB up.

I retried the tests pointing to different servers (Palo Alto, Auburn), but in each case the 4S continued to outpace the S2 on download speeds.

Would appreciate any thoughts re: what's going on with this - I can't reason why the phone w/the supposedly faster cell data connection has ~60% of the 'slower' phone's download speed!

2nd part of my question is - I'm told that AT&T will be releasing their version of LTE in the SF Bay Area come Nov 2011 ... when this happens, will the HSPA+ S2 be able to take full advantage of the new network's speed, and what kind of real-world down/up speeds can one expect on the net network?

I think AT&t is doing it on purpose. They did it when the Atrix 4g first got on the market. Cnet took note of that. I just did this with my little brothers atrix and h was getting damned close to 6mb compared to my 2.5mb at my house in the exact same spot. We have to call at&t and scream at someone.

I just read an article on the PC Mag web site that confirms your results. A little discouraging since I am planning on buying a GS2.

I just joined so I can't post a link to the article. I hope we get some additional results soon to see if this can be sped up.

For phones to reach 14.4/21 mbps on at&t's hspa network i have yet to see it. The highest my thrill ever reaches was slightly over 7 mbps and that was about 5:00 in the morning. i just ran mine three times with 1.67 being the fastest.

I used the speedtest.net app and would average ~3mpbs down and 1 up.
however when I opened the browser and went the speakeasy.net and ran their speed test I'd get up to 6.5mpbs down and ~1down.

I question the accuracy of one...or both?

i asked them (ATT) and they said that they don't have the SG2 in stores in north cali BECAUSE of the LTE version is going to be released

the phone HARDWARE is gonna be different... =(

Perhaps it is simply a local issue. I'm north of Philadelphia PA, and running Speetest.net right now, I get exactly the opposite results. The SGS II averaged 4.5 Mbps down (best of 5.8, worst of 3.8)and a very consistent 1.7 Mbps up, while the iPhone averaged 2.6M/1.6M

I've seen better results from both phones; this is generally a bad time of day for fast access.

Can someone tell me what it says after "MMSC:" ? It says that only registered users can see links, and I don't want to register on another forum just to see a link. After doing the first change though, I haven't seen much difference, though I did see the fastest speed I've seen yet, or 3.8mbps down.
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410

So get this ... I happened to be up late a couple of days ago, and when I repeated this test at 3am, I got a stunning 6Mbps download - I wonder if daytime network congestion has a negative effect on throughput...
