So the UK is going to spend 32 billion on a new high speed rail link from London to Birmingham, supposedly to improve the economy of the north. WTF? If they really want to help us northerners why not spend that 32 billion on infrastructure projects that are actually in the North of England?

Phase 1 of HS2 is to Birmingham, due for 2026. Phase 2 is the one that will reach the North of England, sue in 2032/3

Cost averages €2 billion a year, could be worse.

Personally I'd rather see the money spent on improving the west coast main line, improving transport links between Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds, and improving transport links for commuters who have to travel daily into these cities. Some of the governments own reports into HS2 suggest that improving the WCML would deliver more cost benefit and faster.
