HTC Amaze - what you havent read in the reviews

Bga123

Lurker
I read so many reviews on the Amaze prior to purchase and many were simply regurgitating back the spec sheet or PR Releases. I have had the phone for 3-days now and wanted to post some quick thoughts on thing I never read in previous reviews.

1. No Wifi Calling yet - While this feature was advertised it's simply is not there. Neither the app nor the System Setting menu entries exist for it. I'm told by support that there were plans to introduce a more enhanced version of the WiFi calling code with the phone but it simply wasn't ready in time. By the time the decision was made to hold off till the first software update it was too late to include the earlier version in the phone. Weak excuse in my opinion.

2. Speaker phone quality - In my opinion this is the first HTC phone to offer really good audio levels on the speaker phone. My previous phone was an HTC MyTouch 4G which was simply terrible.

3. Accessories - NONE! Can you believe that at release there are NO accessories for the phone in the store. No D30 cases, no HDMI dongle, no spare batteries and no information when they may be available.

4. Battery Power - Holy cow, this thing eats through the 1730 mAh battery if your do any gaming or video. I watched one 45 minute video (800x480 encoded at 1,024 Kbps with 144K audio in MPEG-4 format) and consumed nearly 20 percent of the battery. I should point out that this phone does recharge rather quickly which does help you get through the day.

5. Heat - Anything that truly leverages these great 1.5GHz CPU's will seriously heat up the back plate of this phone. Not enough to burn you but certainly enough to make you say I need to stop as this is uncomfortable. My son played some game for about 40 min and had to stop due to the heat.

6. Instant shot? - Camera truly is amazingly fast to first shot once the camera app is open but, make sure you press the button firmly or use the touch screen. Secondly, it takes a bit longer than "instant" to open the camera app and shoot the first picture from a phone on standby (aka. screen off)

7. Voice Recorder is back. - Yeayyy. This feature was on the MyTouch 4G and present in the European models of the MyTouch 4G Slide and Sensation but was absent front the American versions. I was told by store people months ago when I noticed this that it was because it was illegal to record phone calls in the US. They told me to try 3rd party apps. Uniformly these would not allow me to do the following; place a call, switch to speakerphone and then start the voice recorder. These apps simply said recording is disabled when on a call if they bothered to display anything at all. In the case of one app it used the internal mic to try and record the audio from internal echos within the phone itself resulting in you hearing your part of the call well on playback but the other party was very faint. I have used this feature on the MyTouch 4G for conference calls when I need to take good notes. Fortunately it works again as described here on the Amaze..

8. Pictures - I need to look at this some more but in general the camera has the ability to capture low light pictures very well for a cell phone camera. The Burst shot feature however, resulted in horribly pixelated pictures and I wouldn't consider it usable in that mode. The panorama feature worked well even with people moving in in the picture. I'd rate that feature about a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10 as it doesn't stitch enough pictures together to get a true 180 degree panorama.

9. App resolution compatibility - Several of my apps were not available though the marketplace to install on my Amaze due to the different screen resolution. Some others did install but only used the upper 4/5 ths of the screen. Not a big deal as I'm sure this will be fixed down the road but I never read about this in any of the other blog reviews.

10. HTC Sense - I do like HTC Sense and the new themes offered by 3.0 but if you want to download more it asks you to sign in to "download apps, widgets, wallpapers and more" to your phone. When you go to create a new account it then asks you to enter your phone number and email address. The explanation for this is as follows; " Your phone number and email address will be used to suggest connections to friends who also use HTC Sense." Say what? I have no desire to have my name recommended to others in order for them to friend me simply because we use the same phone. How ridiculous and yet necessary of you wish to turn on Phone Finder in order to trace a lost phone. Another privacy intrusion I don't like. There are apps out there that let me track the phone directly via GPS which I prefer as it involves a silent SMS query to the lost phone rather than some other entity, in this case HTC, tracking me all the time.

Hope this helps you with your decision to buy or not. I do like the build and feel of the phone but short battery life (especially with no spare batteries) and heat generation is a big disappointment.

You're right, it isn't quite Instant when taking pictures. Still pretty impressive though. My only problems so far is that it restarted twice yesterday on its own and the "New Voicemail" icon won't go away. I've checked it several times and there are no new voicemails. Otherwise, it is a very solid phone.

Is the build similar enough to the Sensation? I'm thinking of buying a cheap silicone case for the Sensation to put on my Amaze until one becomes available for it.

Re Voicemail:

Go to Settings > Call > select "clear voicemail notification" - if it's not greyed out.

The phone is thicker than the sensation, so cases for the sensation will not fit properly. Not to mention the placement of the earpiece/front camera/usb ports/extra camera buttons are slightly different as well.

Great, thank you. Do I have to clear it after each and every Voicemail I receive or will it clear on its own after I've checked it?
I noticed that the Amaze was slightly thicker than the Sensation, but I'm hoping that the case will stretch just enough to cover it until something suitable for the Amaze comes out. I guess some case is better than no case.

No you do not have to clear it each time - at least you shouldn't. If your visual voicemail is set up properly (pre-loaded app) everything should be fine in the future.

I returned my amaze today cause of the battery issues and have a GSII now. The amaze certainly is more feature packed but I think im liking the gs2 more...and it comes with a pair of earbuds! haha.
Anyways I won't be checking in here anymore but I had a full 3 days trying the Amaze out (i haven't been working or busy) so you can PM me if you have more questions...i might be able to answer them for now.

Mine rebooted once yesterday. I have had it for a few days now. My old G2X I had to pull the battery daily due to lockups.

I'm planning to purchase this phone on 10/19 but I'm also considering the GSII. Current plan is to try this first then switch to GSII if battery life is too much of an issue. Is anyone else thinking of switching?

Strange, I read quite a few reviews that the battery life was pretty good on this phone, up there with the Sensation.

I am not upgradable till Feb, but this phone was catching my eye. Really hoping the Prime comes to T-mobile and if so, may get that one. Thing is Samsung sucks at updates. I guess I could always root it.

thanks for posting this....thinking about upgrading to this phone very soon. I was trying to wait for the Galaxy Nexus but the specs for this phone seem better to me. and it looks sexy as hell!

I purchased the Amaze yesterday. I was torn between the S2 and this phone. My wife has the Sensation 4g so I figured we would both stay with HTC phones. So far I am happy with the phone.

Within 24 hours I agree with just about everything mentioned in the original post.

@bga123

Would you suggest any Android phones over this one? This includes the Nexus and Razr. Or are your complaints not heavy enough to go with anything else.

Saying this phone eats through the battery is an understatement. The past two days, I've killed it from 7 am to Noon. Charge during lunch, then kill it again during the afternoon and evening. I'm charging the phone twice a day! This is with fairly moderate use. I use the phone lightly, text a few times an hour, and play a few games in my spare time. I can't imagine how fast it will drain the battery when watching a movie. I guess I'm going to have to invest in a battery backup for flights or any other travel where I may be away from an AC outlet or car charger.

I honestly don't have any problems with heat. I notice the phone heats up a little bit during use, but I would not consider it excessive.

At this point I'm keeping the phone simply because I prefer T-Mobile. I did call customer retention and complained about not being able to find a spare battery and they offered to send me an extra one.

I particularly like the screen resolution, video playback quality, and speakerphone. Finally HTC has a decent speakerphone. Also the ability to record calls is important to me and as I mentioned in my post several of the earlier phones (MyTouch 4G Slide and Sensation) had this ability crippled.

The HDMI adapter cable requires external power via micro USB and you need to use the wall charger that shipped with the phone or other charger that delivers 1 Amp. the standard USB 500 milliamps won't deliver enough power to drive the HDMI interface. It still "amazes" me how useless some of the reviews are which don't highlight these "features".

really check to see what process are running via "task manager" with this you really dont need a app killer as you can see most processes going on. Killing the battery in 7 hours must be a record because even on the first day of having my phone the battery lasted 15 hours and this is with the screen on for 2.5hours, downloading new apps and all the fun of configuring a new phone. I just installed "juice defender" and my last charge lasted 1day 11hours and 29minutes with light use, screen still on for just over 2hours.

the advantage to juice defender is that it turns off and on your data (4G or3G) intermittantly. So you can receive calls and text all the time just all the auto update stuff is limited, which is great at night. Im thinking of getting the pro version which has a specific night setting and would use next to no battery power, 2% or less over 8 hours....however the biggest battery drainer is still the screen, very high resolution and contrast, manage those settings and the battery life will greatly increase.

WOW 15 hours. Must be nice. I just received this phone on wednesday and Im with CMB on this one. Fully charged phone and unplugged @ 7am heavy use till 11am (loading all accounts and apps crap). From 11am to 6pm DEAD with NO use NONE. Screen off for the entire time.

Charged phone and unplugged @ 100% at 2am lost 25% within an hour. Started to get pissed off and did some searching. Google is a wonderful thing. Turns out there are a few apps out there that will not let the phone sleep. Amazon AppStore was keeping my phone awake regardless if the screen was black or not. That helped a tad. Then tried my previous lock screen on the old MT4G which i installed on this one. Widget Locker... I dont know exactly if its helping but it seams to be better. I really cant tell how much i lost since i did not look at the battery percentage.

I may need to look into JuiceDefender again. I used it on the MT4G and did not like it. Then again im sure i did not have the settings right.

What settings do you have it set at?

I'm using one of those battery cases and I'm able to get a full day or more with heavy use from 9am to 3am I guess I only pay like 30 bucks for it at the tmo store

I can duplicate CMB's experience with 5 hour battery life ... if I set all the cutsie pie apps to sync frequently, and and have widgets galore, and configure mail and Facecrack and Twaddle to update regularly. Heck, some of the info widgets (I'm looking at you, Weather) don't even have accurate information when they're supposedly updating.

Rein in the nonsense and you can get 8 hours or more of mail/message checking, some information lookup, and standby. I really admire all the phone does, but they're loading these phones with so much advantageous software that the battery is DOOMED. Doomed, I say.
