HTC Desire A9191- will not update firmware

lofty

Lurker
Hi, I have recently tried to sign up with Uber on my Desire A9191, however I got a message from them saying that I needed to update my software/firmware. The problem is that when I go into the settings to do this by pressing the update software button, I am told that everything is up to date.

I have Android Version 2.3.5 & Software 3.12.2071

The phone was bought second hand approximately 2 years ago, so I have no knowledge of any previous upgrades. As Uber is not the only site that takes exception to my phone I am wondering what if anything canbe done.

When replying please avoid geekism's as I know very little about phones and other techy things - they either work or do not.

Thanks for any help that can be offfered.

Did you mean A9191 or A8181? My answer below is for the A8181 (the original Desire, which this is the forum for), while the A9191 is the Desire HD, which I'm less familiar with. But apart from the first sentence below I suspect my answer won't be far off for that device either.

The last official update for that model was 2.3 something, and even that was not distributed wirelessly. So I'm afraid you won't find any updates that way. And 2.3 is about 6 years old now, which is why you are finding apps that don't work with it.

Unfortunately that means that your options are either to live with the app's that still work, get a newer phone, or get techy (i.e. learn how to install unofficial custom software). There aren't any other options.

If you want to go the techy way, let me know (I doubt many others still watch this section, so posting here is probably a private conversation ;)). I'd have to find out what tools still exist for this device - it's so old that people will have stopped hosting the files we used to use for it.

Hi, Thanks for that Hadron, after much thought I decided to go with a newer phone. The idea of using unofficial software would really just have delayed the inevitable as the phone is dying on it's feet to use a similie
