Root HTC Desire Cyanogenmod installtion help

Hello everyone!
I have a HTC Desire and I want to do some cyanogenmod!!
i kind of get the gist if things but I'm still a bit bamboozled by everything. It seems there are a million steps to getting cyanogenmod.
i have found a "ROM" (i think that's what it's called) i want to install or "flash" to use the android lingo. here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2549776 some thing called KIT KANG.

I looked through the page and i have NO CLUE where to start. Can someone please translate all the android terminology to English so that I, and maybe some others, can understand the steps of the cyan Kit KANG rooting of the mobile.

so i need to root my phone... i have a 4gb microSD card with the cyan kitkang, otherwise i dont know. should i factory erase my phone?
i tried this "z4root apk". i turned it on and for the whole day and night and nothing happened. it just kept spinning.

i would greatly appreciate any help and thanks in advance.

Rooting is device-specific, so you need to find a method that works for your phone. Fortunately we have one . Assuming from the ROM you link that you have the original Desire (and GSM rather than CDMA), rather than one of the many other "Desire" models HTC released since, then you'll find some useful threads collected here. Your best bet for actually rooting is this thread, but some of the others will help explain what rooting is about. You should certainly read the "root memory FAQ" there, since that will explain the stuff about partitioning the card.

Once you have rooted and backed your current ROM and data up you can worry about flashing a new ROM. And yes, to flash anything more recent than 2.3 on the original Desire you'll need a partitioned SD card because the partition is used to extend the phone's very limited memory.
