HTC Desire doesn't find GPS

I'm from Australia and used the HTC Desire for navigation OK there using the free "Navigation" system I downloaded from the Market site. Then in South Africa it failed - said was "Searchibg for GPS" - as I was using a Vodafone SIM there they helped and managed to get it and 3G access to internet running again - but it stumped a few of them until a tech guy sorted it. Now I'm in France and Germany and whenever I leave a WiFi area navigation and 3G access to internet stops again. I've downloaded a free "GPS Test' app and it shows good access to 6 satelites - so thats not the problem. I've checked and tried all the HTC options concerning access to GPS and Internet and I reckon they are all correctly ticked.
Any ideas on how to fix the problem?

What is happening is you have no data over 3G. As soon as you lose your Wifi data connection you can no longer get the maps required for navigation and the internet won't connect. It really has nothing to do with GPS signals.

Contact whoever is your provider in Europe and see what their 3G requirements are, it will change from network to network. If you have a global plan through Vodafone, you may need to enable roaming data menu>settings>wireless & networks>mobile network settings. Be careful, if you don't have a specific international data plan through your carrier, roaming on a regular data plan can get very expensive.
