HTC Desire Gaming..

yeh it is outdated now, (which is why i was going to update it) but i want a phone i will still be happy with in a few years and neither of these look like they'll manage to do that... The n95 stayed modern for ages, i don't think the Desire is modern enough really and the Galaxy S has software bugs and needs to be hacked to work properly so yehh, back to my sexy n95... Even the fact that the camera is on par with my n95 is a bit turnoff, the next generation of phones coming up supposedly have vastly improved cameras soo i'll wait

i think you made a wise decision cancelling your order. The Desire HD will be announced tomorrow and we'll see if HTC upgrade any specs (CPU/GPU). Here's hoping!

I doubt there will be any other 'bug' fixes. Samsung is more intent on numbers than in quality.

Eating your words sooner than I thought, firmwares been released with GPS fix in the US.

Probably a good choice for you, might be worth waitin until the Galaxy S is shipping with 2.2

Also Galaxy S will last a while, it has basically the same hardware as the iPhone 4 only with better screen and GPU so it's got allot of life left yet.

For mobile gaming i'd buy a PSP or a DS. It's all well and good having an "all-in-one" solution, but then you have to compromise on areas. Remember, at the end of the day the Galaxy S and Desire are phones, with a bundled media player and game capability. I still use my iPod despite the Desire having the ability to replace it. I still use my Tom Tom SatNav instead of the in-build apps.

Essentially this argumet could easily be separated into Hardware and Software. In hardware power terms the Galaxy may be "ahead" but I find Samsungs to be unreliable in the long run. I've owned 3 Samsung phones over the years and 2 HTC ones and right now HTC is the clear winner in terms of build quality.

Software-wise i've not had an issue with either platform, although Samsung seem very quick to stop supporting a certain platform and are slower at releasing fixes.

I have used both the phones and i can say that Nobody knows better than HTC to optimize software. HTC has the best software for android. Even their 600mhz phone runs the android lagfree.
But on the other hand galaxy s has the best multimedia capabilities. Video and sound quality is best right now in the market. Also gaming wise galaxy is far superior to any other phone. Desire's gpu is nowhere compared to galaxy s.

Hey guys, i ended up getting a desire (desire HD is too big for my liking) then found out how dodgy the multitouch is... the screens don't support it really, they support double touch but not multi, so when on psx emulator you couldn't push 2 of the same buttons that were on 1 axis without them cancelling each other out and just pushing a random point... youtube video nexus one axis test and you'll see... There also isn't any fixes, there's a rom update that some people say helped but it still doesn't solve part of the problem and even then its a work around.

To me this is a big problem as i wanted a phone that was top end and it had a shiet screen (also you can't see the screen during day)... You can't really pinch zoom either, cos the axes get too close together, you can but you need to start a few cm apart..that said i don't like the galaxy s's cheap finish or the support...

anywho i just sold the desire on ebay, managed to get back almost what i bought it for (lost $60) so no biggy, $60 for a trial, can't complain...

Hopefully a phone will come out soon that looks good, performs well, isn't an iphone, isn't buggy and is right up with the latest tech.. meanwhile, N95 :D

Yeh, they're an awesome phone and am crazy tempted, just didn't like the feel of them, and they look plain, i know that sounds ridiculous haha, also the initial lag and the worry of support is a bit of a turnoff.... but that, up above is what i was expecting on the desire, so pissed, no doubt psx4droid would work perfectly, not to mention run better, hmm, wonder if galaxy s is coming out with a new face any time soon...

mind you, was a fair dummy spit that had me selling the desire, if someone hadn't bought it so quick i'd have been tempted, alot of the new phones are getting too big, i just want the desire with the galaxy inside it... hot

Ever held a galaxy s? My 3 yo's toy phone feels better quality, and touch wiz blows. Sorry, but nothing out there beats sense. Hardly overrated...there's a reason there are apps that attempt to duplicate it. You would have been happy with the desire. Its overall performance is outstanding. But no matter...if you're patient (and it seems you are), something you will be more comfortable with will come along soon enough.

I really don't understand how you can associate more weight with quality, lighter is better when it comes to phones.

The UI is down to personnel preference, I have no problem with touchwiz and at the end of the day if you don't like it you can change it. :D

I'm holding an Epic right now and it feels just fine. I like that it is much lighter than my EVO. It's also sexy as hell. The reason these phones are lighter is because of their screen technology. It has the thinnest screen of any phone due to the touch sensor being integrated into the display. The sad thing is... even though it's so light, it's so much more powerful than the much heavier phones out there.

And who cares about sense or touchwiz when you can load up launcher pro which is superior to both.

The Epic is an amazing phone for gaming and everything else, so it'd be nice if you can try and contribute to the discussion rather than flame people for their phone choice and badmouth other phones for no reason.

I think we all want that. I paid full price for the Epic, but I would gladly pay more for a phone that had a lot of careful thought put into the design and stability. Actually I shouldn't say that, because the Epic has been relatively bug free for me. I've had more issues with the actual hardware. The screen sitting on top of the keyboard is too loose for my liking... and it makes the phone feel a lot less solid.

^^^defensive much? Flame people for their phone choice?? It is MY OPINION that the galaxy s feels cheap...how do you turn that into a personal slight? I'm entitled to express my opinion whether you agree or not, and to do so without being labeled a flamer. Glad you are happy with your device. It feels cheap to me. Plain an simple. Not a dig at people who have one...shake it off, friend. Plenty of people on these forums say negative things about other devices (like, for example the much repeated opinion that the desire is ugly) . So what? I still love it and don't care if some find it ugly.

At any rate no device will be perfect for absolutely every user. I don't like the feel of the sgs in hand and prefer a more solid feel, but clearly others enjoy a lighter phone. The beauty of android phones is that we can both get something we like...but its just a phone at the end of the day. Don't get all wound up because a stranger on the internet doesn't like your phone.

Oh, and while launcher pro is nice...very nice actually...it doesn't hold a candle to sense in my view.

hey guys i am not a gamer and had the same prob about either buying and htc desire or the galaxy....i like the htc more but form reading this thread i am concerned about the desire's gpu....all i play on my iphone 3 were games like need for speed poker etc.....will they play smooth it i buy the htc? thanks

I find the Desire manages gaming just fine. I play a variety of games and have never had an issue. No, it doesn't have the best this or most optimized that when it comes to games but I have zero complaints. If and when I want to do some real gaming, I'll power up the xbox.

Ok that good. actually I never play any game on HTC Desire but I just watched video on youtube and gaming on phone is very nice and really impress me and I think it have batter interface that iphone.

Depends who you speak too, some Desire users claim they lag well others say there fine, lets just say I think some users are less than honest about the performance in games like NFS Shift and leave it at that.

Desire is outdated imo, no amount of software updates will change that but that's just my opinion.

It's all about the Desire HD vs Galaxy S now and the Galaxy S still has the edge when it comes to gaming.

LOL! That's hysterical!

No joke, look at this, Desire uses same version as Nexus One, Galaxy S scores 56FPS in this as thats as highest it will go due to v-sync. :D

yep. just gotta learn to accept it. the HTC Desire is really outdated regarding hardware and since there's a new sense UI, and so is the Nexus One. Good thing that the Nexus is THE Google dev phone, which makes it mainstream coz most if not all devs use this as baseline for their apps. Long live N1!
