Help Htc desire hd backup after factory reset?

Recently, my phone has been faulty. The lock button was unresponsive most of the time. So I phone the people up and they walked me through the 'solution' which ended up being, download HTC sync, back up contacts. Supposedly they also backed up my sms messages, but although i see some new files, they are the type of files that need you to tell it what program to run it in and I simply just dont know. Also it is not clear what, if any, of these files are actually my supposedly 'backed up' text messages.

I was then told to do a factory reset, which i did, without really thinking.

This solved the problem of the seemingly sticky lock button. However, they left me with no information on how to get the data that we put onto my computer back onto my phone. The contacts were back on to my phone, presumerably because of htc sync but I have lost all my messages. I redownloaded an application that i had a long time ago 'SMS backup and restore' or something along those lines, and this allowed me to get some messages back but because i havnt recently backed up my messages i am missing a good few months of messages, possibly around 10 thousand. I know that the factory reset has deleted the data of my phone and there are no applications to my knowledge that will restore the lost data. But is there anyway i can get this data back? For example if anyone here can make sense of the new files i now have on my computer under the four catagories:
- .adobe-digital-editions
- .android_secure
- .bookmark_thumb1
- .data

or possibly another external site, where my messages would possibly be saved, some messages are on htc sense but that hasnt refreshed in months or ive heard something about google exchange servers? which is complete nonsense to me..
I would really appreciate the help, because there are some important texts which i would be loosing. Thanks for the help, in advance and sorry for the lengthy post. Cheers

It's been a while since I used HTC Sync, but to my knowledge, it doesn't backup text messages.

Adobe digital editions is something to do with ebooks, .android_secure is a folder on your SD Card where apps are stored when moved to the SD Card. .bookmark_thumb1 contains images of your bookmarks used for HTC's bookmark widget. The data folder might correlate to the data partition on your phone which is what gets wiped when you factory reset. What files are in there?

In that data file, there are 3 other files:
- footprints
- HtcGreader
- Navigator

To me, it seems like the technician that helped me other the phone and by controlling my computer from his end, copied a load of random files into a new file name 'backup' told me to do a factory reset and hung up.

The .data folder is connected to the navigation app then, there's nothing there that is of any use to you.

Yeah, HTC tech support (their help desk at least) is pretty poor, the majority of their analysts don't appear to have a clue what they are doing. Their generic answer to most problems is a factory reset and if that doesn't work, they'll just ask you to send it in for repair.

The SMS are lost unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done to get them back, sorry. The only thing you can do really is just make sure you them up with SMS Backup and Restore on a regular basis now.

Yeah the funny thing is, when the tech support guy took control of my computer, the first thing he did to find out what he needed to download (in the end it was HTC sync) was to search forums! He did not have a scooby do! Complete amateur, I could of done that, especially as forums actually have helpful people, like you, that would also remind me to back everything up!
Alright nevermind, thankyou anyway. I will just have to settle for my latest back up. Yeah i've now set it to save to texts messages everyone week. I wish i knew about scheduled back-ups before all this.
