HTC Desire HD or Nexus S?

Hi, I am currently an iPhone 3gs owner but i'd like to upgrade to an android. I am having a serious dilemma about the Google Nexus S and the HTC Desire HD even after tons of research and viewing millions of consumer comments and still couldnt make up my mind. Lets leave the price aside for a moment, and focus on the product itself. Which one is the better choice?? keep in mind - i'm about to be a first time android user, i really want the best of the best. Better yet, could someone point out the pros and cons of the Androis OS? OBJECTIVELY. As an iphone user, i gotta know.

ps. does a dual core phone really make the difference? and how far better is the gingerbread compared to the froyo?
Thank you!

personally i would wait a few months, when you'll have more duel core phones out and better phones, for ex samsung are soon to announce the successor to their Galaxy S phone which is basically a nexus S bar the difference android verison.

The thing about dual cores is that it's first generation technology. You wouldn't really know what you will get. Like when touchscreen phones are the newest technology, it is still buggy and sometimes unresponsive. So better wait for the new technologies to be at least a year old, so it doesn't have bugs.

On about your phone, I would suggest the Desire HD. I am a new Android user, not to mention a new smartphone user. I have researched everything that I need to know which smartphone I should get and at last I deside on the DHD. It is easy to use and I never have any problems so far.

I agree with this!!

I do think my DHD is awesome though ;)

12th feb the samsung announcement i think. maybe wait till then other wise both phones are crackers so personal preference really.

though i would say nexus s will get any updates first as its 'pure google/android'

Just let me point out that the battery life, which seems to be the Desire's infamous flaw, isn't really that big. That thing last me about 18-20 hours with moderate-high use.

It really depends on what you want in a phone. If you still are having trouble, wrong down things you want in a phone, and get the one which can satisfy your needs.

Hmmm I am in the same situation. The DHD will be released in Canada relatively soon, and the Nexus S is rumored to be coming in March.

Here is how I see it:

DHD is better then the NS
-Build materials
-Camera
-HSDPA+
-More Ram
-HTC.com services?

NS over DHD
-S.Amoled Screen
-Direct updates
-better battery life
-triband 3g (hated how I couldnt use my Desire while in Japan)

Things that are important to me are Call quality, battery life, and the build quality.

I get pretty decent battery life with my desire (only have a few things pulling data), so if the DHD has battery life on Par with the Desire then it is satisfactory.

You guys have any additional input?

I have the DHD and my Wife has the Nexus S.

The Nexus has a far more vivid screen, so Angry birds looks prettier, but it's bigger on my DHD so that's a win for the HTC for me :D
The Nexus has stupidly annoyingly placed buttons, that you press every time you pick it up. Very annoying but something you get used to.
Battery life, in real terms, seems similar on both. And, I have to say that my DHD does seem to be improving all the time.
The Nexus S is more plasticky, or, lighter and sleeker, depening on how you look at it. Personally I like it.
The DHD is a real tombstome in comparison, but it feels sturdier and I prefer it from that point of view.
The other winner from me is the htc Sense (in the phone, not the useless website.) It's very, very swish and the intergrated contacts give sense a big advantage IMO.

If I were you, and didn't want to wait for the new phones, just go and handle them and see which you prefer.
My Wife was all set to get the DHD, but when she saw the sleeker Nexus, she fell for that.

So, as with most things, horses for courses. They're both awesome phones in my humble, very-new-to-Android opinion, you won't go far wrong with either.

HTH

Chris :)

My first phone in 2 1/2 years after finally retiring my iPhone 3. I love the DHD, and the android OS. Took me about three days to start working things out on it, you kind of have to be into tweaking stuff to get into the Android world, but it is worth the research and playing about!

I don't think I could agree more. My father got a Nexus last summer. Buttons are stupid, some minor things about the OS being laggy and not sturdy. Then it was the sync program "Kies" that ruined some other sync drivers on Windows.

When it comes to battery life, I believe both phones are pretty much the same (as I now have a DHD). BUT the main point (which I have now also pointed out in my battery post thread) is how you condition the battery from start. Although it's a new generation battery, its USAGE time (i.e. one year for current phone batteries in average) is not affected by its treatment, but the batteries cycle life (i.e. the time it lasts on one charge) seems to have quite an effect accordingly to how you charge it the first few times.

Hope this helps :D. As for the DHD I still have not had any problems with it, and I simply love the phone. Good sound in the jack, good screen (I know its not AMO-LED, but still does the job I feel), feels sturdy in your hand, and buttons feel good and are well placed. ONLY thing one might point at, is the speaker quality. It's a bit low, and can't handle certain pitches well, but I almost never use the speaker :)

Could you expand on this? How can you improve battery cycle times with the first few charges? is it the usual, full charge/discharge the first two or three times?

Totally agree there, the Nexus S has an infinately better speaker than the HD, Mind you, that's not too hard, I could fart in an empty bean can and produce a sweeter sound than the HD, it's shockingly bad, surprised I'd forgotten that!
As you say though, there's no need to use the speaker, it's ok for playing games and for anythig else, you should be using headphones anyway :) (if you value listening to music)
