Root HTC Desire not found as rooting procedure describes by device manager

Hi

I am trying to root my HTC Desire using unrevoked 3.2.1 but my device doesn't show up under 'Other Devices' as Android 1.0 as per the instructions when connected in hboot mode on device manager.

Instead it shows up under 'Android USB Devices' with sub directory My HTC.
When I install the drivers from there, Windows says, 'the best software for your device is already installed.'

As I tried this a month or so ago, I thought I might have successfully installed them previously but when running unrevoked it sticks on the waiting for bootloader stage.

I have tried searching this and other sites and tried all 3 USB ports on my laptop to no avail.

I am on Android 2.2 (software no 2.17......)
hboot v0.93.0001
Bravo PVT4 Ship S-On

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Have you installed the appropriate hboot drivers (you should find them in the guide thread)? Don't rely on Windows to find what you need.

Also what Android version exactly do you have? 2.2.1 or earlier will work, 2.2.2 you'll need to use revolutionary instead of unrevoked, so 2.2 isn't quite enough info.

I have the appropriate hboot drivers on my laptop but can't install them as per the guide as my HTC doesn't show up in the same place as the guide says it should nor does windows let me install the drivers which I select by browsing my PC to the file location that I saved the drivers to then Windows comes up with the message I mentioned previously 'the best software for your device is already installed.'

Sorry I'm not sure how to be more specific than 2.2 as that is what its says in seetings/about phone/software information/Android version. Where would I find something more specific if it isn't that or the software number?

If it just says 2.2 you may well be OK (probably means it was 2.2.0). Of course if you get stuck you can use revolutionary anyway.

All I know about the drivers is in our guide here, I'm afraid. I don't use Windows, so have never had to work through that stuff myself (Linux and Mac don't require you to jump through that hoop).

Probobly a silly question, if you've been following the guide, but did you uninstall HTC Sync? If it is still installed it may be causing issues particularly the best software problem.
