Root HTC Desire -- Rooted but lost now

kyduj

Lurker
I rooted my Desire at least 8months ago but never got to work further on it.
Now that the internal memory is down to 11Mb, I really need to start work on it again. But I am lost on where to start now. Not a techie to begin with...took me 2 full days to figure out how to root my Desire previously

Android ver: 2.2
Radio: 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2
Kernel ver: 2.6.32.15-gd96f2c0

Can someone help advise & point me to the right direction as to where to continue this journey...

The Root Memory FAQ would be a good place to start.

The simplest solution is probably to add an ext3 or ext4 partition to your SD card and apply a custom ROM that supports a2sd+ (most do). That means learning how to flash a ROM, so I'd suggest the rooting FAQ, also linked from the All Things Root Guide sticky post, should also be read.

After that, if anything is unclear just ask - all of the regular here have done this (though the numbers are falling now).

Big thanks to you Hadron.

I finally got around to continue working on this. Managed to get my SD partitioned and also S-OFF Desire after much struggle:stupido::stupido2:

But I have more questions...

I have decided to try Redux2 ZM ROM, however, I am not sure about the following...

1. I currently have HBOOT -0.93.0001. Is this considered stock hboot?
2. If I have CMR v 2.5.0.7, is there any point/need to upgrade to 3.0.0.5? If yes, how do I do it?
3. ClockworkMod is already a recovery (?), is 4ext Touch Recovery still required?

Now that I have partitioned SD and S-OFF, do I go ahead to install the ROM? Or is there some steps I still need to do first?

Requirements for Redux2 ZM:
CM7r2 / Stock hboot
ext3 or ext4 partition (1gb recommended)
Recovery (4ext Touch Recovery recommended)

Thanks again.

1, yes stock hboot, unless you ever changed it (you would've remembered)
2 No, that is considered the most stable version on here
3. CWM is fine, 4ext is just the new kid on the block, but is also excellent if you decide to change to it.

4, you are all set to install your new rom, just take a backup from recovery first.

Thank you Shauny and Hadron.

I have finally installed the new ROM and been trying it for a few days.

It seems to work fine but there is an error when i enter SuperSU. It said SU binary needs to be updated. However, when i click to update it gave "Installation failed!". Did i miss out something during the whole process?:hmmmm:

And I also noticed that the ext4 (2GB) that I set is not being utilized and now I am back to having low internal storage space
From Quick System Info, I see the following

SD card storage: total 27.71GB, Free: 26.15GB
A2SD storage: total: 1.87GB, Free: 1.70GB
Internal storage: total: 148MB, free: 11.71MB

Btw, I remembered clearly that I used Alpharev to S-OFF my phone. But just found that my phone is now S-ON... What did I do wrongly? Is it why I am having the issues above?

Android: 2.3.5
ROM: R2 ZM4.5
Baseband: 32.56.00.32H_5.17.05.23
Kernel: 2.6.35.13-stable thalamus@Co-60 #1
BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001

Your radio has changed. Did you flash that, or have you run an RUU at some point? If you had an old Alpharev hboot that would return you to S-On. Won't matter for a2sd but S-Off would let you change hboot, giving you more space.

In fact 170MB of a2sd space has been used. I've not used ZM, but maybe it needs a patch to move the dalvik cache, like the original Redux does? Check the ZM thread at xda I guess.

Yes, I did flash my radio.

Ok, will run Alpharev to S-OFF again. When you said S-OFF will allow me to change hboot, do you mean to use hboot patch from AlphaRev 1.8

Will search the ZM thread again to see if there is any patch or fix around it.

Thanks Hadron.

S-Off will let you change to a hboot that gives you a smaller /system and /cache and a larger /data partition. It isn't a patch, it's a replacement hboot, but you download them from Alpharev so it's probably the same thing you are thinking of. See the root memory faq for info.

Don't know whether Alpharev works with Redux. You may have to nandroid, flash a stock ROM, run Alpharev then restore your ZM nandroid.

Hi

Yes, alpharev18 works with Redux and yes, there is a add on to move dalvic to SD card (which makes a huge difference!) Its called apps_dalvik2ext-UNSIGNED.zip and I think its on one of the redux pages.

Glad you have some memory now. You don't need to S-off unless you intend to change the Hboot ie the internal partitioning of your phone. You do need to do this for some ROMs and it would give you even more memory, but 114M is a lot.

I used alpharev18 with linux (wrote a bootable CD using the alpharev .iso image and booted my laptop to it and plugged in the phone) and it worked first time..
