Root HTC Desire (telus provider) hotspot vs ??

My Desire allows me to use it as a wifi hotsot for my laptop/tablet. What is the advantage of rooting it and then using it as a hotspot, and if advantageous, what are the steps?
 
I have an HTC Desire from Telus, Wifi Hotspot works the same way in my experience. Since Telus has it enabled from the start anyways.
