Help HTC Desire upgrade to Gingerbread

Hello everyone.

I just got an HTC Desire from a family member and I would like to update to Gingerbread. As far as I know this phone is stock with no root or anything like that.

I downloaded the official Gingerbread update from htcdev.com, but every time I try to run the exe file, it gets as far as "Rebooting to Bootloader" and then I get a windows error:

ROM UPDATE UTILITY has stopped working. Then the updater closes. I have set the phone to HTC sync as well as disk drive when connecting via USB. The only way I can even get the updater to run is to put the phone into disk drive mode.

I installed HTC Sync, and the drivers for the phone are present on my system.

My PC is running Windows 7. I have tried using various compatibility options as well as running the program as admin.

Here is more info on the phone:

Firmware - 2.1 update1
Baseband - 2.05.10.08.11
Kernel - 2.6.29
Build - 1.26.573.0
Software - 1.26.573

The carrier HAD been US Cellular. It is currently not activated pending I can update it.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, it's a busy time of year for me.

You cannot install the official Gingerbread on that phone. US Cellular is a CDMA carrier, and the 2.3 upgrade is only for GSM devices. The RUU will detect the device type and refuse to run, which is a good thing because if it did run it would brick the phone irrecoverably.

There is an upgrade to android 2.2 (Froyo) on the USCell website: Android Downloads | Android-Powered Phones | U.S. Cellular. If you're on 2.1 that would be worth doing. But I'm afraid that's the best you can do without rooting (even then the selection of custom ROMs for CDMA Desires is much more limited than for GSM, but there should be some options).
