Root HTC Eris won't boot

zach_c

Lurker
When I power on my Verizon HTC Eris, I get a white screen with the 3 androids on skateboards and it just stays there. When I hold down Volume down and Power buttons at same time while powering on, I press Volume up for Recovery, then I get a black screen with android and triangle with exclamation point. I believe the phone had a rooted version of android 2.1 (I think). Any suggestion on how to resolve?

Welcome to the forums, Zach! :hello:
Did you just acquire the phone? Looks like it might have a version of CyanogenMod ROM loaded on it. Looks like you don't have a custom recovery loaded on it (like Clockwork).
I've moved this to the Eris root subforum for more support. :)

the first thing i would do is try and flash the "root rom" in efforts to get the s-off hboot. it may or may not flash, depending on your current hboot and main version.

download it from here: Shipped ROMs

rename to PB00IMG,place on root of sd card. boot to hboot, and allow the update. (note those are zeros, not capital "O"s :))

if it fails with a "main version higher" error we can go from there. :)

Had to get a microSD adapter, then go get a usb/sd adapter.

I named the file PB00IMG (w/o extension) and placed on root of microSD card. Booted up by holding Volume Down and Power buttons. It looks like it runs HBOOT immediately, some lines flash on the screen to fast to read and then disappear (it did this before too). I also tried selecting HBOOT and get the screen again with some lines flash and disappear on the screen. Not sure if this did anything.

unfortunately,no. it did not do anything. if you never saw a status bar, then the file likely was not found.

check the sd card and make sure it is formated FAT32. if its plain FAT,or anything else,PB31IMG is invisible.

the phone needs to see "PB00IMG.zip" so renaming "PB00IMG" with windows is usually the correct thing to do,because of how windows adds and hides the file extentions. in rarer cases, windows may NOT be adding the ext,so the file may be named only "PB00IMG" wich is just as invisible

once yovue verified the correct sd format, you can try changin the name(adding/subtracting the file ext) and see if that helps.

what should happen,is the phone finds the file, and yull see a couple of status bars as the phone unpacks and checks the file. this can take several minutes,so dont panic or interupt it ;) if it likes the file, then it will ask you to upgrade <action> yes,if i remember correctly,at wich point youll press the tracball to allow the update.

SD card is FAT32. Renamed file to include .zip. At HBOOT got status bar and loading the zip file, selected <action>, then got...

Main Version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot device?
<action> yes

When I select the tracball, it goes to the white screen with 3 androids on skateboards, then just hangs there (waited 15 min). Any other suggestions? I am willing to try:)

rats! thats what i was afraid of. seems most of the lil guys by this time have upgraded to software that you cant flash that rom over.

basically,the last option is this:
-unlock via htcdev
-attempt to install a normal recovery
-failing the above, attempt to install a tiny "rescue recovery"
-use recovery to flash a program to check for bad blocks
-use recovery to fix the bad blocks
-use recovery to flash a file to change the main version,so the rom we tried will flash(and give you an s-off hboot)

if youre up for that, ill get some links and more exact directions :)

If you can point me to the info and I will take a look. I will then decide if its worth my time & effort. Thanks for your help!

basically what well do is this: Announcement: Do You have a Soft-Bricked Eris? - xda-developers

if those directions are a lil technical,or overwhelming, dont worry we can walk you thru it. if you decide to give it a go,just start by downloading the files and unlocking thru htcdev. you can use the file and directions in post 4 to get adb/fastboot working,so you dont need to follow that part from htcdev.

holler if you have any questions about the directions in deciding wether or not to procede :)

I appreciate the support. At this point I have spent more time than I would prefer. I going to sell it on ebay as is. Thanks again!
