HTC Evo Clearing Data/Apps Question: 1st Forum Post, please help

This is my first Android Forum Post. I have the HTC EVO. Apps are draining data. There is an option to "Clear Data" for the apps. I am sure that clearing the data does what it says, but I don't know what happens to the app itself. Will apps stop working?

Internet version 2.3.5 is using 21.06MB of data. What happens if I clear it?

Mail is using 14.15. What happens if I clear it?

Contacts Storage is using 15.02. Again, what happens?

Is there something in the settings I can change that will free up more space?

Clearing data usually results in losing app settings along with saved data etc. Most apps give a warning to that effect before deleting data to be sure that's what you really want to do.
