ok so i am currently on 2.1 and i never get the upgrade message for 2.2, also when i try to manually force the update.zip it gets the error on the recovery screen. WHAT DO I DO???

Try: Menu button > Settings > About Phone > System Updates
The OTA should have been pushed out to all devices by now so if you are on VZW's network, you should have some type of update ready for you to download (assuming you decided to wait on the notification when it was pushed to your device)

Try using another sd card for the update. If that doesn't work and you are sure that you are doing the update correctly, take the phone in to a VZ store and have them flash the upgrade for you. a friend at work had the same issue and they couldn't get the upgrade to work at the store either so they backed up his info and gave him a new phone with a free gel case to boot!
