Is there a way to set a different sound for each contact for texts. like each contact has a different sound for when you get a text from each person.

Welcome to Android Forums.

As far as I know, the default messaging app for HTC phones does not permit individual notification tones for text messages. You'll need to use an app like https://market.android.com/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms&feature=search_result to be able to assign different sound by person.

You might want to double check about the default app in http://androidforums.com/htc-inspire-4g/.
