Help HTC M8 GPS

I will be traveling from California to New York starting this Saturday. I bought a universal dash mount so I can use my M8 for GPS. What I was wondering, how can I protect my phone from the sun or heat damage? Will having it in a case help it at all?

I have traveled quite a bit with my M8 on the dash. It will complain about getting too hot, but I have found that using the A/C set to windshield (or defrost) with the fan set to medium high, keeps myself and it cool.

Thanks man, very informative! I just went ahead and bought a Garmin. Everything should be ok.
