Help HTC M9 email icon turned red

hightails

Lurker
I have a feeling there must be a simple answer to this, but I have googled without success. I've had this phone over a year, and another HTC phone before that, but I've never seen this before.

As it says in the title, the email icon at the bottom of my home screen has turned red. Not just a red marker - the whole envelope is red. It's also in the open position, ie open envelope with a letter sticking out the top (also with redlines on it). I've checked my apps drawer, and the icon in there is the same.

I have tried deleting all my emails (not a problem, because I am set up to receive emails temporarily in the phone, which later transfer to my PC). Also rebooted device.

It's an M9 running Android 6.0 and Sense 7.0. Service provider is Virgin UK.

Watching, mine just turned red this afternoon

The changes were in the last couple of updates. The latest one is dated 11th October (not sure when I actually updated), which produced the current icon. If I recall correctly, the previous update just changed the colour of the old icon to red.

If you put an 'Inbox shortcut' on your homescreen it uses the same icon.

Thanks guys. Red for me means danger and I assumed it meant something was wrong. It does look odd, though, sitting there blushing next to the messages and other icons.

Tommo, I thought I'd prove the point for both of us. I checked my current version as 10.00.814476. Then I went into Apps and uninstalled all updates. It went back to 9.50 or something similar and returned to normal colour. Then I updated via Playstore and its red again. Be aware that if you try to repeat this you will have to enter all your email settings again.

Thanks for your prompt responses.

Yes, I know ;), just before the last couple of updates the Mail app locked up on me. 'Force stop' and 'cache clear' didn't resolve it so I had to resort to uninstalling updates which removed all accounts.

To be fair it was the first time I've had to do that on my M9 (16 months old) or M7 (40 months old).

:)

Wondered why that had happened, would make more sense if the red was to signify new and/or unread emails, maybe it does? Yes, and why not re-colour some of the other icons?? Weird from HTC!

Yup, my wife has a HTC 10 and the icon is red on that. So no big surprise that this style change is now propagating to other HTC devices.
