HTC not syncing with google contacts?

Hello all.
Just got my greasy hands on a HTC Hero and lovin' it. I am a bit of a noob re: android so please forgive me if my first question has an easy answer.

I have used HTC to transfer my Outlook contacts to the phone as a one-off but even though I have "Sync Contacts" enabled (Home->Settings->Data Sync->Google->Contacts) on the phone I don't see these contact details when I log into Gmail on my Win PC and click contacts???

Incidentally my calendar syncs from Hero to Gmail/calendar perfectly.
Or am I doing something dumb?

Your contacts are probably saved in your phone, but not in the Google phonebook. You have to export your outlook contacts as a csv file, I believe, then import them to your online Google account, then sync it to your phone. I would delete all of the contacts from your phone first so you don't end up with duplicates
