HTC One M8 ( Phone Storage Issue)

Good Afternoon

Android Version - 6.0

HTC Sense Version - 7.0

I have a One M8 which has 16 GB of memory as standard. I have also added a 32 GB Samsung microSDHC UHS Grade 1 Class 10 Card.

It has been working great for two plus years now and each app i install, i then move the app to the SD Card.

The SD card at the moment shows that i have used 2.94 GB / 29.80gb. The apps subsection in the sd card menu states that i have 1.89 GB worth of apps on the SD card.

However the total storage of my apps that i have transferred to the SD card should be 11.30 GB. When i look at apps installed on my phone, the 11.30 GB of apps are marked as "On SD card" but it appears they are still using the phone storage.

My phone storage is shown as 15.53 GB / 16.00 GB

In the SD card storage menu, if i click on the apps subsection,it lists all my top storage utilising apps but once again the apps storage usage is only listed as 1.89 GB.

I would appreciate, if anybody shed light on this issue. I am now getting storage space running out messages on on the phone.

Kind Regards

Luke Hanson

Where do you store the photos and videos taken with your phone's camera?

Do you have some big apps (games...) that need downloading additional data from time to time?

Hi Ivt

Thanks for your reply

I have about 4.27 mb of photos and no videos and both are stored on the phone storage

In regards to apps, my biggest app is spotify which atm takes up 3.37 GB (due to downloaded playlists), below is a list of my top apps by storage size:

Spotify - 3.37 GB

Outlook - 184 mb

Governor of Poker - 181 mb

Dolphin Browser - 174 mb

Quiz Up -144 mb

Quora - 127 mb

Amazon Video - 123 mb

Alto - 108 mb

Brain it on - 108 mb

Evernote - 105 mb

All of the above apps plus others, i changed their location to SD card and it states they are on the SD card. However they are still using phone storage

My guess is that the OS has moved apps to the SD card but those apps somehow still have their respective data on the internal storage.

Could you confirm the SD card's actual used space and free space, ideally out of your phone, for example on a PC?

At work at the moment, i will remove the sd card when i get home and us an adaptor to view it on pc. Will update when i have more info.

Once again thanks for your reply

Hi i have just removed the sd card and all the apps that i have assigned as "on sd card" are now greyed out. If i click on them, it states app not installed

I inputted my the SDHC card into an adpator and opened it up to view the storage capacity on my pc, below is a screenshot of what i found

Apps - 3.30gb

Images - 4.72mb

Videos - 8:00kb

Audio - 6.66 mb

Downloads - 35.33 mb

Other - 200 mb

So it seems that Android has its own way to manage your apps. It can move apps to SD card upon request but it doesn't force the apps where to store their data because once you use your SD card as adoptive storage, the system sees it as part of its internal storage and the apps can continue to put their files on the default location which is in fact the internal storage until it's full.

So the real benefit of the adoptive storage method only comes when your internal storage is completely full and the system starts using the SD card to store data.
