Kingo is a catastrophe. Absolutely, completely and totally. It's far more like an infection than root.
If you didn't unlock using HTCdev.com then verify that you're not unlocked by holding volume down while powering on, it'll say at the top of the screen.
If you need to unlock, do that by following the instructions at
http://www.htcdev.com - backup everything you can first, it's going to erase stuff. Try Helium Backup.
Once that's done, get the Mini-SDK from here (the linked post, not the first one) -
http://androidforums.com/threads/adb-guide-updated-2014-11-11.443072/#post-5389081
Unzip it to get the sdk-tools folder. Windows Explorer, shift+right_click, choose to open a command window here.
Get TWRP and copy it to the sdk-tools folder -

With phone in FASTBOOT USB mode, say in command window -
fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.5.0-totemc2.img
Go here, choose an uninfected rom that's already rooted, and follow the instructions to install as specified by the rom you've chosen.

No root checker required - when you go with the real deal, toys like that just waste your time.
Hope this helps!
