Help htc one xl camera not working

When I press the camera button a message appears on the screen saying 'unable to start the camera' I've spoken to my provider and they just tell me to factory reset which I wanna avoid if poss. Can anyone help me?

Welcome to the forums.
I can only think of one thing other than the factory reset & that is hold the power button down & the phone will switch off.
This simulates a battery pull which doesn't lose your settings etc, you may be lucky & find this will work for you.
Good luck

Hi guys i have the same problem, did you find a solution without factory reset? Tried the clear cachet but that didnt work :(

I have the same problem. but I just reset mine, and within a few minutes the camera stopped working again. I could really do with some help. I really dont want to put it in for repairs.

If you've factory reset and the issue still persists, you've little option but to put it in for a repair, sorry :(

Does it error with 3rd Party camera apps?

I fixed this on my girlfriend's One XL by following El Presidente's suggestion of clearing the camera app data/cache, but I also turned off "Fast Boot" from the Power Options.

Settings - > Power - > Fast Boot (toggle to off)

I then powered the phone off and back on again, now works fine.
Remember to turn Fast Boot back on again.

I have the same problem with my phone and I have tried both of the recommendations with no success. Any other suggestions?

Snap chat does not work and instagram will only work until I try to use the camera. I have also cleared my browser history and most of my chat history... Still no success

I have never backed up the phone... So everything needs to be backed up :-S
Tried using HTC sync manager a couple days ago when this first started but it didn't work, something about outlook... Do you have a software recommendation?

Give helium a go, that pretty much does everything aside from pictures and media, you'll just need to copy those over manually. Here's the Play Store link for Helium: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup

I've only used once, but I'm sure there are decent instructions when you open the app.

Do you know if your contacts are backed up to google? Head here on a PC and see if you can see a list of the names and numbers on your phone: https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#contacts

Let me know if they aren't and I can walk you through importing/give you an app that will back them up.

For SMS, take a look at this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore

Thanks so much for your help, I hate to be a pain but I am terrible with this kind of stuff. My contacts are not backed up on google for some reason, could you let me know how to fix that?

No trouble at all! :)

Open the contacts app on your phone, hit the menu button and you should see an export option? You want to export to SD.

You'll then need to copy that file to your desktop, then open this link again. Hit more, then import, then select the file you just copied across.

You should then see them on screen?

Make sense?
