Help HTC Sensation Getting Very Low Data Speeds

rb80923

Newbie
I just got my HTC Sensation phone Monday and my data speeds have been really low. I'll post my last 5 results with download, upload, and ping:

155 kbps 81 kbps 242ms
105 kbps 48 kbps 500ms
11512 kbps 4095 kbps 79ms (wifi)
76 kbps 19 kbps 464ms
247 kbps 67 kbps 99ms

The first 2 tests were done on the Edge network, the last 3 on GPRS. I have not yet contacted TMobile about this, as I came here first.

Is there anything I have to do to configure the phone to get the data speeds that are expected from this phone?

This is my first experience with android phones, but the overall experience so far with this phone has been horrible; beginning with the short battery life and the HTC Sync software not working for me (sorry for going a little out of topic) and now the internet speed.

Download speeds using (non 3G) GPRS are always going to be very slow. It is the old 2G system. And Edge is only 2G with a bit of a boost (but not much). You need to be using 3G. Have you got mobile data enabled. Menu > settings > wireless and networks and tick mobile network. Or better still put HTC's widget on one of your home screens so you can switch it on and off

As for battery life, like most smartphones it is not as good as the old phones, because there is a lot going on in the background. How many hours are you getting? Suggest you disable Bluetooth and WiFi when not needed - they eat juice. Again easiest way is to put HTC's widgets for them on one of the home screens. And stop it autosyncing everything (menu > settings > Accounts & Sync). I have only weather autosyncing.

You could also try buying an Anker battery off of Amazon - lots of good reports for them on this forum and at XDA. I have two plus the stock battery. Ensures I never run out.

Can't help with Sync unless you give us some more info. It works fine with mine on a Windows 7 laptop, but it takes 30 secs or so for the phone to find it, so you have to be a bit patient. Have you got the latest HTC Sync software? You can download it from the HTC site.

Anything other than ''H'' is a waste of time for me.

I did receive an update email recently from Orange telling me I could use High Speed data in more places now and I had to restart my phone to take effect but I haven't been anywhere to test it properly.

T-Mobile also had a cap for me on the download speeds of 354kbps so I'd ring them up and moan about it, not taking any of their lies as answers too, I now get 1.8mbps, which isn't awesome but is a lot better.

But as said, if you're not even getting HSDPA then you're never going to get good download speeds and it won't be a phone problem but just the area you're in, are you HSDPA or 3G in any other areas of the country?

Look here for an explanation of data connections.

I'll configure my phone with suggestions given by those who answered (thanks) and see what happens.

I did get better speeds while shopping at the mall today, so I might live in an area where there is bad reception.

I will surely check out the Anker battery. I see that Amazon.com have good reviews about it. I have seen that Seidio has a 1900 mAH battery also, but it is over 2 times higher-priced than the Anker.

Finally, I got my HTC Sync to work. I just reformatted the microSD card I had and erased everything that my old Blackberry put on the card and was able to sync afterwards with iTunes.
