If you put security on your phone and forget the password or unlock pattern there are a few options. First, if you enter an incorrect password or pattern too many times, you must then unlock the phone with the credentials for the google account it is registered to. Be advised that this method only works if you have an active data connection on the phone so that Google's servers can authenticate the account.
There were some phones that you could bypass security (a bug) by pressing the power key a couple of quick times before completely booted which could give you the default unlock, or by receiving a call while locked let you answer the call and then you could long-press the home key. I do believe most of these bugs have been corrected so if your phone is up to date, they may not work. You should check with other members in the forum for your specific model to get the full story.
Unfortunately the only other way is to perform a factory reset which will wipe out all your apps and settings. Most of your data should be okay.
