Root HTC Sim Lock

Hi All. New to this so please excuse my lack of tech terms. I have an HTC Wildfire S A510e on Vodafone PAGY which is over a 18 months and I've been using as an emergency spare phone still on PAYG Vodafone. My other half is taking the leap into this centuries mobe from an old basic payg on o2. For obvious reasons the o2 number/sim will be kept and used in the HTC. I've got the sim unlock code but even though I've tried an alien sim in the HTC to get it to prompt for the code it won't. I can access all the Wi-Fi and mobile network menus but still shows 'no sim card'. I have read on some sites this unlock code can be entered either with or without a sim card inserted? I have accessed the 'hidden munu' which shows its ***locked*** then 'MARVEL PVT SHIP S-ON RL' and when I scoll down to SIMLOCK it says ' SD init fail!'process done,reboot device? Help please??
