Help HTC Sync issues

I'm having serious trouble with HTC Sync. I have been fighting with it for the past three days. I'm running Vista Home Premium SP2. I have tried HTC Sync 3.0 and the latest version from the HTC support page. As soon as I plug my phone into my laptop (HTC Sync as default connection) with HTC Sync open my phone finds it connects then disconnects within five seconds or less and closes HTC Sync. I have emailed HTC's support team and have tried everything they have told me to do down to the period. I have also tried going to AT&T and seeing if they might have answers but they were as clueless as I am. If anyone has any insight on how to get this fixed I'd love to hear it. Any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is the solution to your problem, but I had something similar happen -- basically Google Calendar not synching with the phone Calendar -- and the solution turned out to be removing some apps. That might not make sense initially, but it turned out to be the solution. My symptom was that around the same time, (a) I got notifications that my phone storage was low and (b) my calendar wasn't synching properly. I tried going into the auto-sync settings, and clicking the "Sync all" and "Sync now" buttons had no effect -- no animated sync recycle button twirling, nothing; but the sync recycle button remained white and didn't change to green, so something seemed amiss. After removing some apps, it started synching again.

Probably somewhere in the forum is something on this, but it turns out that apps are installed in the phone storage, even if their data are stored on the SD card. Some apps even store data in the phone storage. And phone storage is way too limited on the HTC Aria; I don't know how it compares to other android phones, but it's a problem.

I've never used the sync software... are you actually trying to sync your phone with some folders on your laptop? If so.. somewhere in that sync software should be a place to designate what you will sync with. If you are just trying to access the phone via your laptop.. you should just set the phone to connect as a mass storage device. Then when connected to the laptop it should show up as a new drive/drives.
Then you can peruse and copy or move files from one device to the other. Not owning your phone I'm only taking a guess at your actual situation... I would like to welcome you to AF and hope you solve your connection problem.
