i went in to telstra with my htc velocity and they said to fix a problem i have i may need to upgrade my software as it is old... i hit search for updates and it says there are none.... is there any other way of updating?

Hello and welcome to AF. 
There may be an update for it but it just hasn't come out yet. Rooting is a way to get custom ROM OS's for your device, which are like the current ones, but can be optimized for your device. I would not go the rooting rout for it's too much trouble to just get a custom OS of the latest Android OS. What problem do you have?
