HTC Wildfire boot loop problem

My Wildfire's memory was close to full capacity so I tried to delete some mail and sms but the applications kept crashing. So I tried to turn the phone off but it wouldn't turn off, so I pulled the battery out. Since then when I turn the phone on it just does a boot loop (rotating around the HTC "quietly brilliant" screen and vodafone logo").

Is there any way I can retrieve my sms and contacts from the phone before doing a factory reset?
