Can I get a later version of android to load to my HTC wildfire

Since we don't know what version you are running, we can't answer that question. 
If there is nothing available through the "software updates" menu (Settings > About), which is unlikely with a phone that old, then your only option is to root it and load a custom ROM based on a newer version (assuming one exists - I'm not a Wildfire expert).
