Which system update caused it? Were you installing a new Windows Mobile image or installing Android? If it was a Windows image then you might just take it to your provider's store (for example, TMobile in the USA) and see if they can help you. If not, then you might still be under HTC's warranty?
I would be curious to know where you got the image that you installed. You should never install images that aren't specific to your provider/country. For example, there are images available for the US phones on tmobile.com. But if you live outside the US (let's say the UK) then you would get the image from HTC (such as HTC).
If you didn't use the correct ROM you might have bricked it.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. You initially said that you installed an update to the phone and now you are saying you bought it this way from ebay? Which is it?
If the phone is truly bricked then you are hosed -- you have to buy a new phone. Hence the term "bricked". About all it's good for now is throwing it around or using it as a paperweight.
If it was working prior to the system update then I still need to know the same information I asked for previously, and some more info might be useful as well. Essentially we need the following:
1. What country do you live in?
2. Which system update did you download and attempt to install? (please send a link to where you got it from)
3. Did you get a second battery with the phone? If so please try that one.
4. What happens if you plug in the charger and then pull the battery -- does it power up then?
